Details of recent meetings

Last night yours truly and around 10 Oaks of all lengths of service met with Jon Rickerby - our RFU Development Officer.

I'm going to run through the outcomes of these two successive meetings:

We discussed joining the Sheffield ruby 'action group' - where clubs including Abbeydale, Stocky B, Mozzy B and Tigers all bid for funding together from three principal sources: the Co-Op Fund, Awards for All - and the South Torkshire Fund.

Tom Ward and I will oversee the bid-writing for the club. We will submit a claim for �9,999 of 'Awards for All' money before the end of March 2009, with the assistance of Jon Rickerby and our Treasurer.

We discussed a 5-year plan for the club. Jon Rickerby is going to meet with us on two further occasions before the end of the season to discuss this plan (going far beyond aiming to play at Niagara forever). To this end, we talked about the fact our club is going to hange constitutionally to a 'CASC' club - whereby we can Gift Aid all subs, donations and corporate sponsorship to increase nearly all our revenue by 28% gratis.

To this end, playing subs may be increased depending on the outcome of a vote at the AGM - scheduled for 28th April at the Gas Club at 4.30pm.

Non-playing subs may be reduced however to a nominal amount - but more people will be liable to pay them. Again, to be discussed in the forum of the AGM.

We are going to be running the following sides from September:

Firsts (see below)
Seconds (Merit League - our contact is John Shepherd of the RFU)
Vets (Merit League - ditto)
Ladies (Season of friendly, ad hoc fixtures - contacts are Mandy Garner and Vicky Putson of the WRFU))

Glynn and others will communicate the outcome of the South Yorkshire Seniors Committe which may include a ruling on the club being placed into a new Yorkshire 6 league [this is simply a suggestion at this stage].

We talked about the notion that the Club should fulfill its quota of 6 'golden rule' officer positions - allowing us to receive more international tickets and hence more revenue.

All players will have a responsiblity to pay subs either by direct debit monthly or in one lump sum pre-season before the start of the next season - again, to be debated at the AGM.

New structures for better communication were mooted - with all players making their mobile numbers available to the Committee in a central spreadsheet ahead of next season.

I arrive on Friday and be ready to play Saturday as long as you are in agreement and the coach will give me permission. If you dont want I stay in the third half only.. jejeje

Hi guys,

Just to let you know how your Committee and Captains are trying to work just as hard as our players do on the pitch on a Saturday...

We are trying to locate our weekly training at a location away from Hillsborough Park - talks are still ongoing.

We are looking at finding a better playing surface for next season, at least for our 1st team (negotiations linked to the above).

We are trying to recruit more players to form a regular 2nd team.

To achieve this last point, we are in talks with The Ball in Crookes to find sponsorship to fund a recruitment drive - including an advert in the Green 'Un at the end of this month, a flyering storm at both Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam Universities, and to gel this activity; a 'meet your new squad' trial/training session at Goodwin Sports Centre early next month.

We are seeking to arrange 2nd team fixtures at Myers Grove before the end of this season so we can increase the size of our playing squad.

We are trying to improve the social life of the club, for those who are interested: the deal with The Ball, if fruitful, will provide: weekly Friday and Sunday Sky rugby sessions, 'taping' of the Six Nations games on Sky Plus with associated playback boozing 'live', a monthly social (the first to be held on the evening of the 'new' squad session at Goodwin) and a summer series of Lions BBQs.

HOW CAN YOU ALL HELP?

1. There is fitness training tonight at the Gas Club. Choose between a run or weights. Please attend for 7.00pm.

2. Training this Wednesday. We have a tough fixture away to Hemsworth coming up. Please be at Hillsborough Park for 7.30pm prompt. Changing rooms at the Gas Club will open at 7.00pm and close at 7.20pm for the duration.

3. Bring a player, a new face, to the above. Just one each and we have a 2nd team already, and our recruitment spends can be focused at a 3rd team/Ladies XV.

4. Bring your �25 subs for the WHOLE SEASON to training as above. Payable to Mark Hoggins please.

5. Please reply to this message with offers to volunteer for daytime/evening flyering around the Universities when needed.

6. Also, anyone with contacts in other clubs that could provide a sensible level of opposition for our 2nd team, please provide me with contact details.

7. If you have ideas for the destination of an end of season tour in the UK, again, let me know please.

8. Finally, if you work for/run a small business, please consider sponsoring some new warm-up kit for the squad.

Ciao ragazzi!

Weights training in the pit at the Gas Club, Monday 5th January, from 7.00pm. Those who fancy a run: we'll get the changing rooms open for you.

Squad training - Wednesday 7th January at 7.00pm sharp, at the Gas Club. Trot down to Hillsborough Park - training will commence there at 7.30pm for those going direct.

Interesting game against Mosborough on the 10th - please ensure a high turn-out. Bring a mate if possible - remember we are trying to organise three 2nd team fixtures for later in the season (March/April).

Peggy Sue would like everyone to note that training this Wednesday will be at Hillsborough Park, and will be full contact consistently. The 'working team' will be announced halfway through training. Thereafter, any not in this list of 18 names have the remainder of training to play their way in. As many as possible at training guys, the more at training the bigger our chance of sticking one on Stocksbridge.x

There is also going to be a short meeting regading a number of things to do with the club. It is really important we do both the training session and the meeting so please make yourselves available and come down. We will make it enjoyable, interesting and useful.

Saturday 6th November

Sheffield Oaks have no fixture on December 6th - instead we will have EARLY training (perhaps around 10.00am or so). Early - because then everybody will not be giving up the best part of their Saturday.

This training will be as organisational as possible - fitness is a personal matter and all that - because the following week, on the 13th, we have a golden opportunity:

Revenge against Stocksbridge, for a narrow defeat that could or should have been our first win of the season.

After four or five weeks of coaching, and four games, I have seen no lasting change in the way we have played. I take full responsibility for the difficulties in introducing a new lineout system - not easy, but I still believe it can work with the right lifters and jumpers.

Scrums are difficult - and I have come to think that Stuart and I have persevered with picking some people in certain positions for too long. This will change - hopefully for the better. However, we will need full co-operation from people asked to play in the tight 5 who have not had much experience there before. As people start returning from injury/holiday in the coming weeks, competition will get stronger - enthusiasm for a new position will only help you getting starts in games.

In the evening of 10th of November there was a committee meeting which hopefully had as its outcome a plan for more funding - for a scrum machine, lights, a new training surface, new weights equipment, even funding for attracting enough raw recruits for a 2nd team... raw as they are, new recruits will increase competition in training and for places.

See you all on Wednesday 12th (or failing that, Saturday 15th for Harrogate at home - early meet, details at training/from Stuart).

Right you buggers, start coming down to training. Fireworks my arse! There were 8 people down on Wed - and 2 couldn't do full contact.

The more people come to training the better session will be had and the better performances will get on Saturday. It gives us more chance to work on things ahead of the game, rather than in the 20 mins before! Also it means less injuries will be accrued throughout the season as people become acclimatised to the physicality.

Basically sort it out.

I had the meeting to do my practices out and I choose again SHEFFIELD!!
